We elegantly and exclusively document Berlin art, style, culture and the city’s most bohemian residents who live and think on an international scale. From leading figures in the world of music and arts, to upcoming graphic designers, illustrators, filmmakers and choreographers.
Splendid Berlin’s editors have a wealth of experience in print media, their photography and writing appearing prolifically in books, magazines and newspapers including The Independent, Vogue, The Fortean Times, NME, Der Spiegel, The Guardian, The Stool Pigeon, Nude magazine, Vice, Bizarre, Electronic Beats and Neo 2.
We’ll also be covering famous artists with a love of Berlin who have successfully clung on to their integrity. We’ll feature exclusive photo shoots and interviews by the Splendid Berlin Team with notable subjects such as The Kills, Adam Green, Suede, Sonic Youth, Aimee Mann, Ladytron, Bonaparte and many more.
FOUNDING EDITOR & CREATIVE DIRECTION – HEIKE SCHNEIDER-MATZIGKEIT
Berlin/London based photographer Heike Schneider-Matzigkeit’s work is published prolifically and internationally in major books and publications such as NME, The Guardian, The Independent, Neo2, The Fortean Times amongst others. Her editorial shoots have focused on many notable artists such as Suede, Primal Scream, Amy Mann, Gary Numan, Ladytron, Sonic Youth, Melissa auf der Maur, Kasabian, Echo & The Bunnymen, Candy Clark, The Kills and her photo of Amy Winehouse appeared on the cover of NME. Additionally, her live photography has resulted in iconic shots of the likes of Smashing Pumpkins, Franz Ferdinand, The Libertines, Manic Street Preachers, Jane’s Addiction, PJ Harvey, R.E.M., The Cramps, Interpol and Iggy Pop.
She currently resides between London and Berlin, and works out of her Central Berlin Studio Lux Revolver, focusing on her first photographic art book Berlin Reflections – Antlitz Berlin published in the Autumn of 2015.
Academically, she studied at London College of Printing and the University of Westminster (BA Hons Film, Video & Photographic Arts) as well as RMIT in Melbourne, Australia.
FOUNDING EDITOR & CREATIVE DIRECTION – MARK FERNYHOUGH
Based between London and Berlin, Englishman Mr Fernyhough is a post-medium artist working in the forms of music, literature and photography. Mark’s songs have been featured on BBC Radio, Radio Eins, MotorFm and FluxFm. He has duetted onstage with Rufus Wainwright joined by David Bowie’s guitarist Gerry Leonard, and supported/opened for Suede in Berlin’s prestigious Columbiahalle and Huxley’s Neue Welt. He is currently recording his debut solo album between London and Berlin.
Mark’s essays and writings have been published in countless books, magazines and international periodicals including the Fortean Times, NEO 2, NME, Vice, Bizarre, Stool Pigeon, Clash, Electronic Beats and Nude Magazine. He has interviewed artists such as Primal Scream, Gary Numan, Aimee Mann, Sonic Youth, The Kills, Ladytron, Candy Clark, Richard O’Brien, Adam Green and critiqued one of Amy Winehouse’s final shows for NME Magazine. CULTURAL & GLOBAL AFFAIRS CORRESPONDENT – HILMAR SCHMUNDT
Hilmar Schmundt is science and technology reporter for German weekly Der Spiegel. He’s camped in the snows of Kilimanjaro with climate researchers and, to cap off the production of the movie ‘Northface’, climbed the Eiger with filmmaker Philipp Stölzl. He’s prowled Central Park with the photographer Elliott Erwitt and had supper in front of the fireplace of British painter David Hockney who introduced him to painting on the iPad. He is also a travel writer. His titles include an illustrated bucket list for Enlightenment aficionados, ranging from Galápagos to Baikonur and from Weimar to Dubai. Follow him on Twitter.
INTERNATIONAL LITERARY CORRESPONDENT – NATHANIEL FREGOSO
Nathaniel Fregoso is singer & songwriter for The Blood Arm with whom he has made five critically acclaimed albums & toured the world. He is a prolific songsmith having founded L.A. supergroup AAnchors AAweigh, embarked on a solo career under the moniker Thee Nathaniel Fregoso & the Bountiful Hearts & collaborated with French pop star Anaïs. In 2011, he moved to Berlin with two guitars and his dog Jackie. Fregoso spends his free time reading Bukowski poems, contemplating Borges short stories & studying Bolaño novels.
